People ran, walked, pedaled, and pushed in communities across the region on Sunday, September 15 in support of cancer research. It was a day to honour the legacy of Terry Fox, the 22-year-old cancer survivor who embarked across Canada in 1980 on his Marathon of Hope on one leg but had to end the journey near Thunder Bay because the cancer had returned. Fox died in 1981.
The Chute-à-Blondeau Terry Fox Run took place at Voyageur Provincial Park on a long route following the main road from the park office to Iroquois campground and back. Participants not only were able to support the cause of cancer research, but they also could enjoy a beautiful day in the park.
In Alexandria, the Terry Fox Run event on Sunday raised $5,990 and was made possible by 70 participants and 26 volunteers. The Alexandria route began and ended at Island Park.
Terry Fox events also took place on Sunday in Embrun and Russell village.
Students at Grenville Elementary School will have their Terry Fox Run event on September 27.
