Across the region this Sunday, September 15, communities will be hosting Terry Fox Run events to raise funds for cancer research.

The annual events are the legacy of Terry Fox. In 1980, the 22-year-old cancer survivor from British Columbia who had his right leg amputated, embarked upon his Marathon of Hope from St. John’s Newfoundland to cross Canada. Unfortunately, the cancer returned and he had to end his journey near Thunder Bay. Fox died of cancer on June 28, 1981.

In Chute-à-Blondeau, the Terry Fox Run begins at 8 am on September 15 at the entrance gate to Voyageur Provincial Park and continues until 4 pm.

Two Terry Fox Run events are taking place in Russell Township on September 15. The event in Embrun begins at 9 am at the old Embrun train depot. In Russell village, the event begins at 9 am on the fitness trail behind Mother Theresa school.

Anne Thevenot is organizing the Terry Fox Run in Alexandria. In 2023, the event there raised $6,400.

She wants local residents to know that they do not have to be a jogger or marathon runner to participate in the event.

“You don’t have to run,” she said.

Alexandria resident Bob Hardy, a cancer survivor who uses a walker and regularly enters marathon events, will be there to accompany those who wish to take a slower pace.

Additional volunteers are also welcome.

The Terry Fox Run in Alexandria begins at 9 am on Sunday, September 15 and continues until 12 pm at Island Park. The event concludes with a picnic

“It’s about getting together and raising money for the Terry Fox Foundation for cancer research,” Thevenot said.
