What was the price of a chocolate bar in 1947 (8 cents) and do sheep really have upper front teeth (no!). Canola was developed in what country (Canada) – and by the way, is our ‘cash cow’ today! These were but a few questions on the 4-H Scavenger Hunt that was held after 4-H members judged dairy cattle, hay, chocolate chip cookies and financial posters on July 28 at the Canada Agriculture and Food Museum in Ottawa.
Prescott’s 4-H Fun Day organizing committee (Kelley Allen, Caitlin Allen and Ida MacDuff) invited Glengarry County’s 4-H members to join in and all together, 13 4-H members with younger siblings and parents alongside five 4-H leaders had a superb Sunday enjoying the museum’s animals, buildings, exhibits and spacious grounds on a lovely warm summer’s day.
This event afforded the 4-H youth an opportunity to engage in valuable life skills such as critical thinking, judgement, decision-making and collaboration (the members were paired together for the scavenger hunt), as well as, increasing their knowledge of dairy, a primary field crop, baking and finance.
A special thank you to Caitlin who facilitated the logistics at the Museum, where she works as a Farm Operations Team Member. 4-H is a wholesome program for youth (aged 6-21) to learn about topics, enjoy hands-on experience and mentorship. 4-H’s motto is “Learn by Doing”.
