Construction Holiday, that summer tradition unique to Québec runs from July 21 to August 3. The Sûreté du Québec is advising drivers the need to drive safely and watch for increased enforcement on the province’s highways during the two-week holiday.

Under the theme La sécurité ne prend pas de vacances! (Safety doesn’t take a vacation!), police will focus their enforcement efforts on road and recreational safety.

The Construction Holiday period represents a time of year when the number of collisions with serious injuries and fatalities is particularly high. During the 2023 holiday, 20 people lost their lives during 15 fatal collisions that occurred on roads under Sûreté du Québec jurisdiction. Four deaths in four fatal collisions involving an off-road vehicle also occurred during the 2023 Construction Holiday.

About one-third of Québec residents are on holidays during the Construction Holiday, which leads to increased traffic on highways and waterways.

The Sûreté du Québec invites vacationers to be safe when doing recreational activities. Helmets are mandatory for all-terrain vehicle riders and it is strongly recommended to wear a personal flotation vest at all times while boating or using other watercraft.
