Champlain Township firefighters were busy on land and water on Monday, June 3.
According to Director of Fire Services Ghislain Pigeon, at 4:51 pm that afternoon, Hawkesbury Fire Dispatch received a call from OPP Communications about a boat on fire on L’Orignal Bay.
The boat was assisted to shore by another boater and was brought to the Domaine Chartrand area. Firefighters from the Lefaivre station of the Alfred and Plantagenet Fire Department also responded and completed putting out the fire. The small speed boat was a total loss and the remains were loaded onto a tow truck for removal.
Shortly before the boat fire, Champlain firefighters responded to a house fire on Carillon Crescent.
At 4:13 pm, a call was received about smoke coming from the eaves of a house. The Vankleek Hill and L’Orignal stations responded along with the East Hawkesbury Fire Department. The owner had slowed down the progress of the fire and firefighters went into the attic to put out the fire. Pigeon said the fire had started accidentally after workers at the site had been cutting steel with a grinder earlier on during the day. The house was undergoing major renovations and damage was limited to the attic and ceiling in two rooms.
