The United Counties of Prescott and Russell (UCPR) will have a new, permanent warden as of June 12. A special council meeting will be held that day to select a new chair of the regional government. Any of the eight mayors on UCPR council is eligible to serve as warden and may be nominated by other mayors until June 4.
On May 22, UCPR council adopted a resolution formalizing the process. The warden’s chair became vacant on April 19 when former Russell Township Mayor and 2024 UCPR Warden resigned. On April 25, UCPR council appointed Champlain Township Mayor Normand Riopel as Acting Warden until a permanent replacement is selected. Riopel had served as UCPR Warden in 2023.
The mayor who becomes UCPR Warden on June 12 will serve until December when the warden for 2025 is selected.
When the resolution to allow nominations for warden was approved on May 22, there were no questions or comments from the other mayors about the process.
