Cyclists will be pedaling on May 11 in Vankleek Hill to raise funds to help victims of myeloma.
The 2nd annual Vankleek Hill Myeloma Canada Ride will take place to raise awareness and funds for multiple myeloma, a little-known and incurable blood cancer.
Every day, 11 Canadians are diagnosed with myeloma, yet sadly most people have never heard of this second most common blood cancer until they or a loved one are diagnosed. Due to myeloma being not well known among the general public, signs and symptoms are often dismissed and so diagnosis can take months or even years.
Increasing awareness for myeloma is the first step to ensure a timely diagnosis and the hope of a better prognosis. Unfortunately, delays in diagnosis can lead to complications that may negatively impact quality of life and survival.
Vankleek Hill is one of six places across Canada where The Myeloma Canada Ride will be taking place this spring. The others are Red Deer County Alberta, Richmond British Columbia, Niagara Region Ontario, Sudbury Ontario, and Halifax Nova Scotia. A virtual option is also available for those unable to participate at one of the in-person events or who wish to create their own cycling challenge. The collective national fundraising goal of the Myeloma Canada Ride is $300,000.
Vankleek Hill’s 2nd annual Myeloma Canada Ride has set its fundraising goal at $20,000. With two routes to choose from – a shorter, more leisurely 30–40-kilometre route, or a more challenging 70 – 90-kilometre route – the Ride is an exciting and rewarding way to raise awareness and funds for an important cause.
