Lions Serve and The Maxville and District Lions Club has been serving the community for 60 years.

On Saturday, May 4, the club will celebrate those 60 years with an event at the Metcalfe Centre in Maxville. Past club members will attend, along with members of Lions Clubs from across Eastern Ontario. In 1963, the Cornwall Lions Club sponsored the establishment of the Maxville club.

“We’ve got a good, strong club,” said President Kevin Currier, himself a third-generation member of the club.

Currier said the club currently has 22 members, 20 of whom are involved on a regular basis.

Lions Clubs exist in communities around the world, supporting various community projects and needs. In Maxville, the club recently contributed $20,000 to the redevelopment project at the Maxville Manor long-term care facility. The club has also supported efforts to purchase an off-road vehicle for the fire department. Sight First, a Lions International effort to assist the visually impaired, has also been regularly supported by the Maxville Lions, along with Lions International campaigns to assist young people with juvenile diabetes.

The Maxville and District Lions Club has been a supporter of the Glengarry Curling Club, the current Habitat for Humanity building project in Maxville, and the local Scouts Canada troop.

The Maxville Lions raise funds for these various causes and organizations with returnable bottle drives, community breakfasts from October to June, a curling bonspiel, and a golf tournament.
