Have you ever wondered what goes on ‘behind the scenes’ at your community museum?  The museum is a beehive of activity leading up to the opening weekend. Much goes on in order to make the season a success.

Everyone is invited to a ‘Behind the Scenes – Open House’ to be held on Sunday, May 5, 2024 from 1-4 pm at the Glengarry Pioneer Museum in Dunvegan.  This is a sneak peek before the museum’s traditional opening on the May long weekend. Admission to this special event is FREE.

In addition to visiting the ten historic buildings, visitors can meet and talk with staff and volunteers at six stations around the museum.  Special “Behind the Scenes” stations will include a Welcome area, Collections Management (of artifacts), Conservation, Education, Maintenance, Historical Garden and Community/Events.

At the Welcome Area located in the Williams Pavilion there will be refreshments and entertainment along with displays of the upcoming events being hosted this year. At the Roxborough Hall, guests can discover what goes on when artifacts are acquired, documented, cataloged, and stored.   Visitors can watch demonstrations of artifacts being preserved and will be encouraged to try their hand at the Conservation station.   In the Orange Lodge, visitors can learn how themed exhibits are planned and designed and can participate in helping to set it up at the Exhibits station.

Maintenance is another important station.  Visitors can assist with heritage window repairs and other tasks with the maintenance team.  The museum is privileged to be able to showcase Native and Historical plants in the garden just outside the Star Inn. Visitors can discover which plants indigenous people and early settlers relied on for home remedies.

Last but not least, visitors can find out about the planning and tasks that are involved in hosting the many special events throughout the year, and watch local artisans demonstrate their crafts at the Community and Events Station.

The Glengarry Pioneer Museum is a place to preserve the history of this area, but also a place for community to gather, a place to learn, and a place to get involved. All are welcome to this sneak peek behind the scenes of your community museum on the afternoon of May 5th.
