Glengarry’s Walker Runner is preparing for his next big challenge.

On Saturday, March 30, marathon racer Bob Hardy of Alexandria will be behind his walker and run from Alexandria to Glen Robertson and return, a distance of 25 kilometres. The run is a time trial for the Ottawa Race Weekend on May 24. Hardy registered for the 10K in Ottawa. The time trial had originally been scheduled for March 24 but it was postponed due to snowy weather.

Hardy, 73, had colon cancer surgery just nine months ago. He has also survived leukemia, blood clots, cancerous tumors on his kidneys, and more recently colon cancer and more blood clots. So far, he has raced more than 12,000 kilometres, including a grueling 100-kilometre ultra marathon, the iconic Lumberjack race, marathons, and half marathons.

Hardy is relentlessly dedicated to improving his race-walking technique. He focuses on key elements, including straight legs, toe-to-heel movement, and maintaining an impressive cadence.

Recently, Hardy has promoted his upcoming races to students at Glengarry District High School, and the Glengarry Encore and TR Leger adult education centres. Hardy’s goal is to encourage people to get out walking and donate to the Ottawa Hospital’s Campaign to Create Tomorrow.
