All libraries, including the Champlain Library, pride themselves on having books for everyone. This simple statement has been hard fought for. There are many instances in Canada’s history of books quietly vanishing from library or school shelves according to one person’s whims. Thankfully, in large part due to Freedom to Read Week (February 18-24), that is much more difficult these days.
Since 1984, Freedom to Read Week has championed intellectual expression and the right to access a diverse range of ideas. They do so by shining a light on covert censorship attempts that try to limit or control access to information. The goal is that individuals can make informed choices about the materials they engage with. By acknowledging the importance of intellectual freedom, we contribute to a culture that fosters creativity, critical thinking, and the exchange of ideas
This is the first year that the Ontario Library Association has joined hands as a partner. This collaboration emphasizes the shared commitment of libraries across the province to uphold the principles of free expression and unrestricted access to information.
