The Chateau Montebello luxury resort property is up for sale due to the collapse of the Chinese real estate company that owns it.

China Evergrande Group is facing Chapter 15 bankruptcy in the US, and courts in Hong Kong have ordered the liquidation of the company’s assets, including the famous Chateau Montebello. Evergrande does not manage the resort. Fairmont Hotels and Resorts, which also operates the Chateau Laurier in Ottawa and Chateau Frontenac in Québec City, manages the Chateau Montebello.

More than 300 people work at the Chateau Montebello, which was built by the Canadian Pacific (CP) Railway in 1930 and operated as the private Seignory Club resort until 1970 when CP turned it back into a public facility. The resort is known for its impressive log architecture, year-round sports and recreation opportunities. It is located on the historic lands of Louis-Joseph Papineau whose manor house is adjacent to the resort. Hollywood celebrities, royalty, and world leaders have all visited the Chateau Montebello during the past 95 years.
