Trudeaumania sweeps across region
The Review, December 5, 2012 – HAWKESBURY – Liberal Party of Canada leadership contender Justin Trudeau arrived in Hawkesbury on Friday, November 30, with a certain pomp and ceremony normally reserved for a visiting rock star or Prime Minister – rather than a Québec MP. The son of former Prime Minister Pierre Trudeau spent Friday touring the region, making stops in Hawkesbury and the Alfred campus of Guelph University to chat about his political aspirations, including his hope to one day lead Canada as the next Prime Minister.

Neighbours help nab suspects
The Review, December 3, 1997 – KILMAR – Barbara Downing and her family are thankful they have vigilant neighbours. When two burglars broke into the Downings’ garage on Kilmar Road on Friday afternoon, a burglar alarm was tripped. As the suspects tried to drive away with an all-terrain vehicle, four neighbours arrived and pursued them into a wooded area. While police stood watch on nearby roads, the citizens apprehended the two men and escorted them out of the bush to the officers. Two men from Hawkesbury were arrested in connection with the break-in.

Prescott Players’ production a hit

The Review, November 29, 1972 – HAWKESBURY – The modern comedy ‘Mary, Mary’, written by Jean Kerr, was presented before delighted audiences in St. Jude’s Hall, Hawkesbury, last Tuesday and Wednesday evenings. Gerald Langlois, who played the part of Dirk, gave a smooth and sophisticated performance. Linda Belle-Isle showed promise as Tiffany, Bob’s fiancée and Frank Siversky played Oscar, the tax lawyer, most convincingly.

Local young man electrocuted in Weston, Ontario
The Review, December 4, 1947 – VANKLEEK HILL – Gordon E. Crevier, 19, of Vankleek Hill, was electrocuted in a Weston, Ontario, coal yard, where he was working on Monday of this week, when he touched what police believe was a defective electric cable attached to a coal loader. His death brought the number of truck drivers electrocuted in the Toronto area to six in the past three months. The tragedies have spurred union action to secure better protection for the men.

Contracts awarded for Vaudreuil bridge
The Review, December 1, 1922 – VAUDREUIL – The contracts have been awarded for the bridge on the interprovincial highway from Île Perrot to Vaudreuil, across the Ottawa River. The Dominion Bridge Company was given the contract for the superstructure at a price of $124,768. the Dufresne Construction Company is given the contract for the rest of the bridge at a price of $135,140.35.

Man loses hand to threshing accident
The Review, December 3, 1897 – CASSBURN – While engaged in threshing at Moses Allen’s, Cassburn, last Thursday, Mr. Alex Baron, of 2nd Caledonia, had his hand badly crushed in the machinery of the mill. A surgeon was called and found it necessary to amputate the hand just above the wrist. Mr. Baron is recovering after surgery.
