Former Vankleek Hill Cougar Jeremy Marcotte came back to haunt his former teammates, scoring two goals, as the Gatineau-Hull Volant took a 5-2 home over the Cougars on Sunday, November 21.

Vankleek Hill’s Maxime Laliberte and Josh Desjardins each scored first period goals, with the two teams finishing the first period tied at 2-2. But Gatineau-Hull scored two goals in the second period, as the Cougars ran into penalty trouble, allowing the Volant to pull away – the home squad outshooting Vankleek Hill 15-9 in the frame. Marcotte scored his second of the game at 9:21 of the third period to salt the game away.

The Cougars were shorthanded for the game against the Volant, with only 14 skaters available to travel to Centre Slush Puppie in Gatineau. However Cougars Head Coach Franky Dopelhamer refused to use that as an excuse.

“We had our chances, but we didn’t capitalize,” Dopelhamer commented. “We just missed our opportunities – it happens.”

“I’m not super mad, because we could have (won).”

Vankleek Hill’s lone home game on the weekend was snowed out on Saturday night (November 19), due to travel along Highway 401 being deemed too treacherous. The game against the South Grenville Rangers will be rescheduled to a future date.

The Cougars (7-5) are in action this Saturday (November 26), as they travel to Almonte to play the Inferno (3-9-2). On Sunday, November 27, Vankleek Hill will host the (11-4-1) North Dundas Rockets in a big home matchup at the Robert Hartley Sports Complex in Hawkesbury. Game time is 7:30 p.m.

“It’s a big, big weekend for us,” Dopelhamer said.
