The Beau’s Brewery 5K for Ovarian Cancer Canada is back on Saturday, June 25, as a live in-person event for the first time since 2019.

Held in 2020 and 2021 as a virtual run, the 5K for Ovarian Cancer Canada still raised an impressive amount of money – a total of $53,000 in 2021, brought the event to more than $250,000 raised since the first run was held in 2015. With the 2022 event combining what worked well virtually with a return to in-person participation, organizers are expecting the 2022 event to be a smash hit.

“We’re taking the things that worked well during COVID so we can still offer a virtual option for those who want to walk or run in their own neighbourhood,” explained Jen Beauchesne, Senior Brand Manager at Beau’s Brewery. “But the vast majority of people are coming out to the brewery this year, which we are super excited about.”

The Beau’s 5K for Ovarian Cancer Canada is inspired by Vankleek Hill’s Ashley Courtois (Cowan), whose friends and family started this race when Ashley was diagnosed with the disease in 2015. The event started small but grew each year during Ashley’s three-year battle with ovarian cancer. Ashley lost her battle with cancer in 2018, but the race continues to be held in honour of her wonderful strength and spirit, and her love of running.

“Every year this event has surpassed my expectations and I want to thank everyone who has donated, participated, and collected donations for it,” said Ashley in 2017. “I hope this has helped to raise awareness of ovarian cancer and its symptoms, and that by sharing my story and what to look out for, I have had some part in helping at least one woman get diagnosed earlier.”

The 2022 Beau’s 5K for Ovarian Cancer Canada will take place on Saturday, June 25, rain or shine.

The Beau’s 5K is a walk or run event, with distances of 3K, 5K or 10K. Registration is fully tax-deductible, and participants will be treated to a complimentary glass of Lug Tread when you finish. Registration opened on May 11. The first 250 sign-ups will receive a special 2022 Beau’s 5K souvenir glass! As of early last week there were already 135 participants signed up.

Entry fee is a $40 tax-deductible donation to Ovarian Cancer Canada. In person participants will be limited to 500 for everyone’s safety. Registering online early is strongly encouraged, so you have extra time to raise some pledge funds from friends and family.

Race kits can be picked up from the brewery beginning Friday, June 24, after 3 p.m. Each race kit contains one 2022 event souvenir glass (250 available, sign up early to get one!), a runner’s bib, one 12-ounce glass, or can, of Beau’s Lug Tread, one butterfly temporary tattoo, and one teal ribbon. For those participating virtually, kits can be ordered through the Beau’s online store and mailed out.

The 3K and 5K course is an out-andback on Newton Road, starting from and returning to the brewery. The road is a scenic rural route, a gravel road past farms and homes in Vankleek Hill.  The course is basically flat, save a small hill at the finish line. The 10K course is simply a double out-and-back, for those who want the extra challenge.
