Police were applauded by witnesses while arresting an impaired driver who was spotted driving dangerously on Autoroute 50 near Lachute over the weekend.

On January 29, police officers from the Sûreté du Québec (SQ), from the MRC d’Argenteuil station, were parked with the windows down, in the U-turn on Autoroute 50 at kilometre 261, in Lachute, monitoring traffic related to the demonstration in the Ottawa. At around 8 p.m., they heard an engine revving at high speed and a vehicle passed in front of them very quickly.

The suspect vehicle quickly overtook vehicles in front of it. The police, while trying to reach the suspect vehicle, observed it making several dangerous and illegal passes by travelling in the opposite lane.

Officers intercepted the vehicle at kilometre 265 of the autoroute. A 24-year-old man from Saint-Jérôme was arrested and taken to the SQ station. He was released on a summons. He will appear in court in Saint-Jérôme and could face impaired driving and dangerous driving charges. His driver’s license was suspended for 90 days while the vehicle was seized for 30 days.

The driver’s blood alcohol level was more than twice the legal limit. In addition, several vehicles slowed down next to the police to congratulate them or honk their horns in applause.
