Fire destroyed a garage on Grande Montée in East Hawkesbury on Thursday, January 20.

According to East Hawkesbury Fire Chief Bryce Luker, the fire began at the commercial business at approximately 3 p.m. at the property located on the Ontario side of Grande Montée between Highway 417 and Pointe Fortune. All of the people working at the facility safely evacuated and there was no damage to an adjacent residence.

The cause of the fire is believed to be from a battery charger.

Luker said the building is a total loss due to the presence of significant amounts of gasoline and oil. He said there were several hotspots and walls caving in when firefighters were at the scene.

Firefighters from Hawkesbury, Vankleek Hill, and L’Orignal assisted the East Hawkesbury firefighters at the garage fire on Grande Montée.
