Food banks and agencies across Argenteuil have been busy with Christmas basket applications and distribution.
The Centre d’Entraide d’Argenteuil operates the Lachute food bank and also assists other food banks across the region. The Lachute food bank received 458 applications for Christmas baskets this year, according to Community Organizer Stéphany Bombardier.
Christmas baskets in Lachute were distributed on December 13, 14, and 15. The amount of people who requested Christmas baskets exceeds the amount of people who regularly use the Lachute food bank, which Bombardier said is presently 204 families.
Food bank clients are permitted to use the facility once a week, which is located at 171 rue Mary, at the corner with avenue d’Argenteuil in Lachute. Bombardier said the food bank in Brownsburg-Chatham has approximately 45 to 50 clients, and there are 25 clients in Saint-André-d’Argenteuil. There are approximately 490 food bank clients across all nine municipalities in the MRC d’Argenteuil.
The food bank in the village of Grenville, which also serves residents of Grenville-sur-la-Rouge and Harrington, has approximately 45 to 60 clients, according to Coordinator Paul-Andre Aubry. Christmas baskets in the village are organized by the Knights of Columbus. The Grenville food bank has received 125 requests for Christmas baskets this year and Aubry said more requests were likely to come in before distribution day on December 22.
Bombardier said breakfast foods are in particular demand at the Lachute food bank right now, and donations of personal care items are also appreciated.
