To the Editor:

During the 2021 election the cement plant in L’Orignal became a topic of contention. I took a stance that the federal government could intervene and the federal NDP backed that stance.

Since the election I have worked with members of action Champlain to draft a petition calling for action on this file and Alexandre Boulerice, the deputy leader of the NDP, has sponsored it for presentation in Parliament. This petition has been worded so that it will apply a higher level of scrutiny to all similar projects throughout Canada and not just the proposed cement plant.

When a Parliamentary petition is submitted a non-partisan team assesses whether it falls into federal jurisdiction and will not allow it to move forward if it does not. They have accepted that contrary to what the MP for this region says there is room for federal intervention here by allowing the petition to move forward.

If enough people sign the petition the federal government is required to issue a response. Please consider signing our petition and sharing it widely: https://petitions.ourcommons.ca/en/Petition/Sign/e-3695 .
