The Vankleek Hill Fair organization is moving forward with limited events this year, all pending approvals from the Eastern Ontario Health Unit. Admission is free to all events, except on Sunday, August 22, when a $10 admission fee will be charged through an online Eventbrite purchase.
Friday, August 20
On Friday, August 20, beginning at 10 a.m., the Holstein Dairy Cattle Show takes place at the fairgrounds, with a PeeWee Showmanship class at 12 noon. If you are planning to attend, you are encouraged to bring your own lawn chairs, as bleachers will not be in place this year due to COVID-19 restrictions. Social distancing and COVID-19 protocols should be followed at all events.
Saturday, August 21
On Saturday, August 21, a Western Horse Show begins at 9 a.m. At 1 p.m., there will be the RLH Drill Team Musical Ride, followed by afternoon cowboy games. Those planning to attend should bring their own lawn chairs as bleachers will not be in place due to COVID-19 restrictions. Registration for participants in these events will take place online, in advance of the show.
Beginning at 9 a.m., Pancakes at the Fairgrounds will be on offer, with either a drive-through option or socially-distanced eating arrangements in place at the fairgrounds. Pancakes will be offered until 11 a.m.
At 11:30 a.m., participants in the Vankleek Hill Car Rally/Scavenger Hunt will begin to gather. There will be two routes: the novice route and the expert route. Registrants are required to take part in both routes. Participants will choose a start time between 11:30 a.m. and 1 p.m. Registration costs $20 per car and advance registration is a must (see below for details). Note that one member of each team must have a smart phone.
After completing their first route, participants return to the fairgrounds to receive their second set of instructions to guide them along their route.
Both routes will take participants through Champlain Township in two directions: east and west. Prizes will be awarded for the top five cars: $120, $100, $80 and $60 and $40. There should be three or four persons per car or team and note that participants will have to follow instructions to stay on the route and there will be optional tasks to perform along the way to earn points. Team packages will be distributed to teams at the fairgrounds.
Participation is limited to 40 cars. Participants must register in advance and can get a registration form and the rules and regulations by emailing [email protected] Each route is about 60 kilometres long and route questions and tasks have been developed by a fair board committee.
All cars must return to the fairgrounds by 4 p.m.
Sunday, August 22
On Sunday, August 22 at 10 a.m., there will be an Antique Tractor Pull at the fairgrounds. Note that admission on Sunday costs $10 per person with tickets purchased in advance via Eventbrite. Please note that there are no refunds for advance ticket purchases. The event will take place rain or shine. Children ages 12 and under will be admitted for free. The gates open at 9 a.m. and the pull will begin at about 10 a.m. You are asked to bring your own lawn chairs as there will be no bleacher seating available. Music will be provided in the afternoon by The Stragglers and Hadrian’s Wall. Refreshments will be available on-site.
In the meantime, a Vintage Car Parade will make its way through Vankleek Hill, beginning at 12 noon. Parade entries will depart from the fairgrounds via the rear entrance onto Pendleton Street, turning onto Mill Street, crossing Highway 34 and continuing down Mill Street. The parade will drive through the Vankleek Hill Community Centre parking lot, turning left onto Wall Street to pass by Heritage Lodge. From there, the parade will turn left onto Union Street, then right and back onto Mill Street. The parade will then turn left onto Jay Street, proceeding to Main Street and crossing Main Street to drive along Stanley Street. From Stanley Street, the parade will turn left onto Higginson Street, then left onto Home Avenue, turning right onto Main Street to return to the fairgrounds at 92 Main Street West.
