Federal NDP candidate for Glengarry-Prescott-Russell Konstantine Malakos, is inviting community members to a virtual, bilingual town hall about the affordable housing crisis in the region.

The town hall is scheduled for Wednesday, June 2, beginning at 6 p.m.

In a press release for the event, Malakos noted that the rental market is becoming impossible to afford for many residents. The release said there is anecdotal evidence that some local landlords are removing listings only to repost them at higher prices and that Ontario Works and ODSP recipients have been facing discrimination in the ever more competitive market for affordable housing.

Malakos said he firmly believes the federal government must take action through a national affordable housing strategy, but also that collaboration with municipalities and the province is crucial.

The event is to provide an opportunity for members of the community to express their experiences. Some area residents impacted by the housing crisis are already lined up to speak.

All local mayors, municipal councillors, MPP Simard and MP Drouin are encouraged to attend. Sam Cardarelli, municipal councillor in Clarence-Rockland, has also offered to make a statement on the plans of the Clarence-Rockland municipality with regard to this crisis.
