Champlain Township is looking for a new Director of Public Works.

James McMahon, who has been director of the public works department for the township since 2008, has left to work in the private sector. McMahon’s final day was Friday, April 23.

The advertisement for candidates for the position was posted on Champlain Township’s website on April 14. The ad notes the following:

“Reporting to the Chief Administrative Officer, the Director of Public Works provides leadership and strategic direction to a portfolio of operations services to maintain and enhance the Township’s transportation infrastructure, water and sewer services, facilities and dry waste disposal site. The Director is responsible for policy development, program planning, fiscal management administration and operational direction for all services within the Public Works Department.”

The notice also indicates the township is seeking someone with a university degree in civil engineering, or a related field, and with sound municipal experience.

“It’s a very important job – there is a lot of risk management and operations involved,” commented Paula Knudsen, Chief Administrative Officer for the Champlain Township. “There is water and sewer to oversee, there’s the landfill, roads, snow-removal and winter operations and all the responsibility that brings.”

The township’s CEO said the position is an excellent opportunity for someone already in a public works supervisory position. She expects candidates from across the country will be interested in the chance to work in a smaller community located in a rural area.

“(We’ve tried) to cast the net as wide as possible, because maybe there is someone out in a big city that thinks ‘that sounds like a nice little place’, or perhaps they grew up in (the region),” Knudsen said. “It will be interesting to see who we get as applicants and I’m looking forward to the interview process.”

“It’s exciting to work for the township and we’re looking forward to welcoming somebody new to our team.”
