As of Friday, February 5, the number of active cases of COVID-19 under Eastern Ontario Health Unit (EOHU) jurisdiction had decreased to 219 from 263 cases Thursday, February 4.

There were 23 COVID-19 patients from the EOHU’s territory in hospital as of February 4, and no patients were in intensive care.

The the number of deaths resulting from COVID-19 across the area served by the EOHU as of Friday remained at 60.

Back to school

In-person classroom learning began to resume at schools under EOHU jurisdiction on February 1 and February 2 since Monday was a Professional Activity Day in some schools.  As of February 5, there was only one case of COVID-19 connected with a school under EOHU jurisdiction affecting one student at École élémentaire publique de la Rivière Castor in Russell.

Vaccination situation

According to Medical Officer of Health Dr. Paul Roumeliotis, the EOHU received approximately 1,000 doses this week, but no doses will be delivered next week.  However, the EOHU is to receive 3,000 doses on February 15, and 4,000 doses on February 22.

Roumeliotis said that General Rick Hillier (retired), who is in charge of Ontario’s vaccination distribution plan, has said that larger quantities are likely to arrive in late February and into March.

As of Friday, February 5, 2,732 people across the EOHU’s territory had been vaccinated against COVID-19.

Ontario statistics

The Provincewide Shutdown and stay-at-home order remain in effect across the province of Ontario until February 9.

As of February 5, there were 1,670 new, active cases of COVID-19 across Ontario from February 4.  According to calculations based on statistics from the Ministry of Health, there were 15,722 active cases of COVID-19 across Ontario as of Friday.

There were 1,043 COVID-19 patients in hospital across Ontario as of February 5.  Out of those patients, 325 were in intensive care, and 225 patients were on ventilators.

There had been 6,438 deaths due to COVID-19 across Ontario as of February 5, which was an increase of 45 deaths from February 4.
