There were 20 more active cases of COVID-19 across the jurisdiction of the Eastern Ontario Health Unit (EOHU) as of Tuesday, January 5. On Monday, January 4, there were 469 active cases, and by Tuesday, there were 489.
Out of the 489 cases, the municipality with the greatest amount was the City of Cornwall at 139. The second-greatest number of cases were in Clarence-Rockland where there were 82 active cases as of Monday, followed by the third greatest number in South Glengarry with 44 active cases.
With the exception East Hawkesbury with zero cases as of January 5, and North Stormont which had just six cases on Tuesday, all other municipalities under EOHU jurisdiction had a double-digit number of active cases ranging from 10 in South Dundas to 40 in Russell Township.
As of January 5, there were 213 active cases of COVID-19 in the United Counties of Prescott and Russell, and 117 cases in the United Counties of Stormont, Dundas, and Glengarry in addition to the 139 in Cornwall. There were also 20 active cases in the portion of the Akwesasne First Nation under Canadian jurisdiction.
Seven people with COVID-19 under EOHU jurisdiction were in hospital as of January 5. No COVID-19 patients were in intensive care.
The number of deaths due to COVID-19 across the EOHU’s territory on January 5 was unchanged from January 4 at 34.
The EOHU COVID-19 testing and assessment centres in Alexandria and Casselman will be temporarily closed from January 11 to January 22.
All of Ontario remains under a provincewide shutdown that is intended to reduce COVID-19 cases. All but essential businesses and services are closed, and many retailers are only permitted to offer pickup or delivery service. Bars and taverns are closed, and restaurants are only offering take-out and delivery service.
No social public or private social gatherings are permitted, unless it is with a person who lives alone.
Most students in publicly funded schools returned to class on January 4, but the majority of them are learning from home, online as a result of the provincewide shutdown.
The Loblaws corporate website reported on January 3 that one employee at Asselin Your Independent Grocer in Hawkesbury had tested positive for COVID-19. The last day that the employee worked at the store was December 27, 2020. The store remains open.

Ontario situation
As of January 4, there were 25,840 active cases of COVID-19 across Ontario, based on calculations using statistics from the Ministry of Health. That was an increase of 3,128 cases from January 3.
The cumulative number of cases of COVID-19 across Ontario was 197,360 as of January 4. On Monday, the Ministry reported that 166,790 of those cases were resolved. Resolved cases do not include deaths.
There were 1,347 COVID-19 patients in hospital across Ontario as of January 4. Out of those 1,347 patients, 352 were in intensive care, and 245 patients were on ventilators.
There had been 4,730 deaths due to COVID-19 across Ontario as of January 4.
