On Saturday, May 16, the number of confirmed COVID-19 cases within the jurisdiction of the Eastern Ontario Health Unit (EOHU) increased to 135 from 134 cases on May 15.

According to the EOHU, the single new case is in the United Counties of Prescott and Russell.

The number of resolved cases of COVID-19 within EOHU jurisdiction on Saturday was 70, which means there were actually 65 active cases.  Out of the 65 cases, there were 60 active cases among residents of the United Counties of Prescott and Russell and 39 resolved cases.  On Saturday, there were four active cases in the United Counties of Stormont, Dundas, and Glengarry and 17 resolved cases.  In the City of Cornwall, there were 14 resolved cases and one active case as of Saturday.

Among the active cases within the EOHU territory on Saturday, two patients were in hospital and in intensive care.

As of Saturday, May 16, there were 10 deaths due to COVID-19 in the jurisdiction of the Eastern Ontario Health Unit (EOHU).  All deaths were residents of the Pinecrest Nursing Home in Plantagenet.  On Friday, 33 residents and seven employees of Pinecrest continued to have COVID-19.

There are additional COVID-19 outbreaks at St. Joseph’s Continuing Care Centre (Quinn House) in Cornwall and at at the Woodland Villa long-term care facility in Long Sault, near Cornwall.

There are also two regular coronavirus outbreaks at long-term care facilities under the jurisdiction of the EOHU.  They are NOT the same as COVID-19.  There are many varieties of coronavirus and COVID-19 is a just one illness that can develop from the virus.

Long-term care facility employees are currently not required to self-quarantine at home when they are not at work.  However, people living with employees in those roles will be tested if the long-term care employees they live with become ill with COVID-19.

Ontario figures

There were 22,313 confirmed cases of COVID-19 across the province of Ontario on Saturday, May 16.  That total was a 1.8 per cent increase from Friday, May 15.  Out of the total number of confirmed cases on May 16, 17,020, or 76.3 per cent of the 22,313 cases were listed by the Ministry of Health as resolved.

Across Ontario on May 16, there were 975 COVID-19 patients in hospital.  Out of that number, 180 patients were in intensive care and 135 patients were on ventilators.

As of Saturday, there had been 1,858 deaths due to COVID-19 across Ontario, which was an increase from 1,825 deaths on Friday.
