The Sureté du Québec (SQ) wants the public to be aware about a series of thefts of catalytic converters off of vehicles in the Laurentides region in recent weeks.

Catalytic converters reduce toxic emissions from vehicle exhaust systems and contain highly valuable precious metals like platinum, palladium, and rhodium, which is why criminals steal the parts off of vehicles.

More than a dozen catalytic converter thefts are currently under investigation by the police. In the vast majority of cases, sport utility vehicles were targeted.  The thefts have occurred both in public parking lots and near private residences.

The SQ wants citizens who observe unusual behavior to write down a brief description of the person, including gender, approximate age, and colour of clothing and to note if they have noticeable tattoos, scars, or jewellery.  It is also important to write down the licence plate number, brand, and colour of any vehicles involved.

Suspicious incidents should be immediately reported to the SQ by calling 310-4141 or * 4141.

Any other information relating to catalytic converter thefts should be given to police by calling the Sûreté du Québec Criminal Information Centre at 1-800-659-4264.
