Black smoke billowed over the west end of Lachute early in the morning of Sunday, October 27.

Firefighters responded to a tire fire at 327 Rue Principale at a former industrial property located near the former Patrick Morin building supply store.

According to Lachute fire service director Alain St-Jacques, firefighters got the blaze under control.

Due to the thick, black smoke from burning tires, nearby residents were told to stay indoors and keep windows closed as a health precaution.

Efforts were also made by firefighters to prevent water runoff from entering storm sewers or flowing towards Rivière du Nord.

St-Jacques said there were no injuries.  The property was completely destroyed, and the cause is still under investigation.
