Personal fitness and healthy living has and always will be an imperative aspect to our day to day lives. Course Cadet Kale from 57 Vankleek Hill Royal Canadian Army Cadets in Vankleek Hill will be taking a step further in developing this important life skill as he has been selected for the Basic Fitness and Sports Course at Blackdown Cadet Training Centre from July 7 to July 26, 2019.

This three-week Basic Fitness and Sports course provides cadets with an opportunity to participate in fitness and sports activities, and to develop knowledge and skills on how to perform the duties of a Fitness and Sports Assistant. Cadets participate in activities like following a personal fitness routine, leading warm-up and cool-down sessions, assisting with the Cadet Fitness Assessment and assisting with recreational sports.

Cadet Kale Massie has spent the last week learning about maintaining a healthy and active lifestyle.

“We’ve had three lessons on eating healthy, and the results of not eating healthy and how to keep healthy. I’ll bring that back to my home corps.” There are approximately 430 cadets who complete the Basic Fitness and Sports Course at Blackdown just like Cadet Kale Massie. When asked what he enjoys the most about training at Blackdown, he said, “It’s a great way to stay active and get to spend time with other kids! It’s fun in general, you get to do all sorts of stuff.” He also mentioned that he intends to improve his leadership skills while here at Blackdown CTC.

Blackdown is the place where approximately 3300 cadets participate in training that will improve their leadership, physical fitness, and good citizenship, making this the largest training centre in Canada. As cadets complete their training they will be filled with a sense of accomplishment and bring their new skills back to their local units to share with their peers.

The cadet program is open to all youth between the ages of 12-18 years old with a focus on leadership, citizenship and healthy living. To find out more, visit www.cadets.ca and click on “Find Us” and visit the Facebook page to see their adventures! www.facebook.com/centralregioncadets
