The results are out on how local students are reading, writing, and calculating and they are mixed for local schools within the Upper Canada District School Board (UCDSB).

The Education Quality and Accountability Office (EQAO) of the Ministry of Education administers standardized testing in reading, writing, and mathematics for grades three, six, applied and academic level mathematics in grade nine, and secondary school literacy.

Overall, the UCDSB is below the provincial averages in all subjects, but it’s a big board covering most of eastern Ontario.  Locally, Pleasant Corners Public School is significantly below the provincial and UCDSB average for all the tests.  Laggan Public School significantly exceeds the provincial and board averages.  The numbers are closer to the Ontario and board averages at Maxville Public School.

At Vankleek Hill Collegiate Institute (VCI) and Glengarry District High School (GDHS) in Alexandria, the grade nine mathematics results are significantly below both the provincial and UCDSB averages.  However, the literacy test success rates are significantly higher than the board and provincial results for the secondary school literacy test, although the GDHS results higher than VCI’s on both the mathematics and literacy tests.

The test results in some ways reflect other statistics involving these schools.  At Pleasant Corners and VCI, 66.9 per cent of students come from households where English is not spoken at home.  This could be a reason why both schools are below average on reading and writing, especially on standardized tests given in English.  Although, the language spoken at home should have less influence on math scores, which are significantly lower at Pleasant Corners, in the Applied and Academic levels at VCI, and at Maxville Public School where most students do come from homes where English is spoken at home.  Mathematics scores of both levels are only slightly better at GDHS and only Laggan Public School meets or exceeds provincial and board averages in reading, writing, and mathematics.
