September is the month when community life returns to normal after summer holidays, and Royal Canadian Legion Branch 423 in Alexandria has a lot of things happening throughout the month.  The first event is Cadet Recruiting Night for Royal Canadian Air Cadets Squadron 379.  It takes place on Tuesday, September 11 from 6:00 pm to 9:00 pm at Glengarry District High School.

Legion Week takes place across Canada from September 14 to 22, and it kicks off in Alexandria with music by Doug and Pam Champagne from 7:00 pm to 11:00 pm at the Legion on Friday, September 14.  Admission is free for that event.

On Sunday, September 16, card sharks can enjoy the afternoon at the Legion’s euchre tournament.  It’s $5 per person to play.  The tournament starts at 1:00pm and is all individual play; players switch partners after each game.

If local military history is your thing, there are two free Legion Week talks taking place at the Alexandria legion.  On Monday, September 17 at 7:00 pm, local historian Robin Flockton will present about “Glengarrians on the front; St. Lucia to Siberia, 1914-1919.”  The next day on Tuesday, September 18, Allan MacDonald, Stormont, Dundas, and Glengarry counties archivist will give a talk at 7:00 pm at the Legion titled “The Very Rev. Major Ewen J. MacDonald.”

Anyone wanting to improve their talents with a fountain pen can go to branch 423 at 7:00 pm on Thursday, September 20 for calligraphy night.  Anick from Left & Write will be there to give instructions.

On Friday, September 21, the branch is honouring veterans with a Veterans Dinner at 7:00 pm at the Alexandria Restaurant.  Dinner is free for all veterans from the branch and their spouses.  Musical entertainment will follow.

The Alexandria Legion is golfing “fore” a good cause on Saturday, September 22.  The branch’s golf tournament is taking place at Kenyon Greens on Highway 43.  The cost is $40 per player before August 31 and $45 after that time.  Fees are to be paid at the bar.  Tee-off time on tournament day is 12:00 pm.  A meal will follow the tournament at the Legion branch in Alexandria with entertainment by Lee MacKinnon and “Big D” Donald Lavigne.

There’s also a Legion Week draw happening at branch 423.  It’s a fundraiser for the Ted Rudolph Fund and proceeds go to the Alexandria Food Bank.  All you have to do is write your name on a toonie to win dinner for two and a bottle of wine at “the NOG,” (the North Glengarry Restaurant).  The draw takes place on Saturday, September 22.

Proceeds from all Legion Week events in Alexandria go towards the Homeless Veterans Assistance Fund.  The busy month at the branch wraps up on Sunday, September 30 with the general meeting at the legion at 2:00 pm.  For more information about upcoming events, call the Legion branch at; (613)525-2213 or go to www.alexandrialegion.com
