One of the people hoping to be the Conservative Party candidate in Prescott-Russell-Cumberland says she will give her yearly raise amount to charity if she becomes the Member of Parliament (MP) for the riding.

Julie Séguin of Hawkesbury says she will forgo yearly pay raises MP’s receive and donate the equivalent amount to local charities.

“I am a normal middle-class person, like many of you, and I understand the challenges of living paycheck to paycheck, especially in these difficult times with the increased cost of living and out of control government spending, I believe it is crucial for our leaders to lead by example,” Séguin remarked in a news release.

Séguin was elected to Hawkesbury town council in 2022 and works for an MP in Ottawa.

No date has been set for Prescott-Russell-Cumberland Conservatives to nominate their candidate for the next federal election. Former MP Pierre Lemieux is also seeking the nomination. Only members of the Conservative Party are eligible to choose the candidate. Both Séguin and Lemieux are attempting to sign up new party members who will vote for them whenever the nomination meeting is held. The winner of that nomination will then be the Conservative candidate on the election ballot for all voters.
