On Sunday, September 13, 2009, the family of Private Patrick Lormand received the kind of news no family ever wants to receive.

The 21-year-old Chute-à-Blondeau resident was serving his country as part of the Canadian Forces in Afghanistan when the armoured vehicle he was driving struck an improvised explosive device. Lormand was killed in the explosion.

At that time, he was the 130th Canadian soldier to be killed in action in Canada's Afghan campaign. He had joined the Canadian forces in November 2009 and this was his first mission to the war-torn country.

When George and Linda Heinzle were married in 1986 and expanded their dairy cow milking operation shortly thereafter, they had little idea of the example they would later set for the local farming community - and the country as a whole.

On their 550-acre property in St-Eugene, home to Terryland Farms, the couple has slowly expanded their dairy farm operation in both a traditional and an innovative way.

Angry words and sarcastic remarks dominated what was supposed to be a brief update on the town's 2010 budget.

Chief administrative officer (CAO) Normand Beaulieu provided council with an update on the budget, which included some additional requests for financial support from community groups such as Centre Culturel Le Chenail, Friends of Feral Cats and the Prescott-Russell Coalition Against Drugs.

"There are some items council needs to consider, particularly if we want to keep the tax increase at zero per cent," Beaulieu commented.

Town councillors are struggling to understand the consistent drop in the amount of recyclables people are placing in their blue boxes.

Reviewing the report of the joint recycling committee at its meeting on March 1, council wanted to know why the amount of recyclable materials being collected in Hawkesbury, East Hawkesbury and Champlain.

Mario and Chantal Lascelles are making their dream of expanding Mary's Country Kitchen and Fine Foods a reality.

Having outgrown their current location at 22 Main Street East, the Lascelles have purchased the vacant Victorian home located at 117 Main Street East and are planning to relocate the restaurant there in the near future.

"We haven't set a specific date or timeframe at this point," Chantal told The Review. "We want to take our time, do it right and make sure we're ready. So, we're just going to work at it and we'll open when we're ready."

Residents of Argenteuil will be a little richer this spring, thanks to a motion by the city of Lachute to dramatically reduce library fees at the Jean-Marc-Belzile library on Rue Principale.

The library is completely free to all Lachute residents and is now significantly cheaper for the residents of surrounding villages.

To those who have made it their life's work to rescue and care for abused or unwanted animals, the horseracing industry is rife with stories of neglect, abuse, and tragedy.

Perhaps, as if to further complicate their plight, a primary concern of such rescuers is that not many people are aware of the plight of abused horses - one that more often than not, they say, finds its roots in the industry.

A group of ten private investors in Quebec are lobbying the provincial finance minister to allow them to reopen harness racing in Quebec and to revitalize an industry that pulled up lame last October, after the last of the Quebec tracks officially closed.

Investing $100,000 of their own funds, the Quebec Jockey Club is currently seeking to obtain licences and permits from the Quebec government that will allow it to do pari-mutuel betting and to begin racing in the Montreal region.

Renowned horseman Yves Filion claims he was all but born in a stable alongside the horses he loves.

One of Quebec's preeminent Standardbred breeders and racers, Filion is a second-generation racehorse breeder who has spent his life dedicated to horses. He now runs Bayama Farms, a racing stable in Saint-Andre-d'Argenteuil, near Lachute.

A long-anticipated plan to create a cooperative for regional farmers and food producers to distribute their goods locally and fresh will come to fruition this spring, according to its organizers.

Farmers at the helm of the bilingual Eastern Ontario Local Food Co-op are now sketching out the details and hosting monthly information sessions with the hopes of bringing together at least 30 to 40 food producers before the launch in late May.

Mario Apolloni, chair of the board of directors of the federation, noted that the role of public libraries in today's context has become "more relevant than ever.

The Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources (MNR) is continuing its investigation after a 19-year-old woman was caught in a coyote foothold trap while walking her dog last week.

Krystle Morrow and her border collie, Koby, were walking along a familiar snowmobile trail not far from their Calypso Street home when they became ensnared in foothold traps that had been set to trap coyotes.

For that reason, Le Centre Culturel in Alexandria was proud to host its second annual International Women's Day Gala at Ecole Secondaire Le Relais last Sunday, March 7.

The auditorium at Le Relais was filled to capacity with women, as well as a few men who came out to show their appreciation.

The Skotidakis Goat Farm, located just outside St-Eugene, is a 500-acre family owned and operated farm that has been producing fine dairy products for 35 years.

Family patriarch Peter Skotidakis purchased the farm in 1975 and started his dream project with only 20 goats.

A cloud of uncertainly that has hung over the office of Argenteuil MNA David Whissell was brushed aside last week, as he reiterated his decision to hold the post until the end of his term.

"I continue to believe in politics," Whissell told The Review. "We need men and women to believe in politics if we are to leave a better future for our children. I am the MNA of Argenteuil and I will continue my mandate. It is an honour to serve the people of Argenteuil."

The 2009-2010 season has not been kind to the Hawkesbury Hawks, but if their last home game of the season was a preview of things to come, the future looks bright for the Junior "A" squad.

Nearly 300 fans poured into the Robert Hartley Sports Complex on Friday, March 5 to pay homage to their hometown Hawks, who thrilled the crowd with a 2-0 shutout of the visiting Carleton Place Canadians.
