The former mayor of Brownsburg-Chatham, Lise Bourgault, is challenging the current municipal council and mayor over their claims of a $1.9-million deficit allegedly created under her administration, as well as a loan of the same amount that citizens will be asked to pay for with a "special tax."

"I have relinquished all political aspirations and now can speak as a private citizen and ratepayer," Bourgault wrote in a letter circulated to media and the municipality's residents last week.

"However, I also speak as a former mayor, not only because this presumed deficit has been attributed to the administration I directed for six years, but also because our citizens have the right to know the truth."

Despite last week's cancellation of a press conference to officially launch the long-awaited broadband Internet project, the United Counties of Prescott-Russell is moving ahead with plans to bring an expanded high-speed Internet service online for the region.

The press conference was scheduled to take place prior to the regular meeting of counties council on Tuesday, August 24. Counties CAO Stéphane Parisien explained the press conference had to be "pushed back to a later date" because there are still some details that need to be worked out.

Driving through the bumps and ruts in the roads of Argenteuil will go a little smoother this year, following a $2.3-million injection of provincial funding into the rehabilitation of municipal roads throughout the county, with $1.5 million earmarked for Argenteuil.

MNA d'Argenteuil David Whissell announced on August 25 that all nine municipalities within the Argenteuil region will benefit from the aid program, which aims to improve roads.

One of the most complex, and geographically largest, native land claims under active negotiation in Ontario may soon come to a conclusion.

Lynn Clouthier, the Algonquin negotiation representative (ANR) for Ottawa, explained that negotiations will soon come to an end and a settlement could involve everything from co-management of Algonquin Park to economic development initiatives, land, financial compensation, defined resource harvesting rights covering fishing, hunting, trapping and gathering, and related cultural matters.

Families in Saint-André-d'Argenteuil won't have to dig quite so deep in their wallets or travel as far to ensure quality daycare for their children, following the grand opening of the new Centre de la Petite Enfance La Puce a l'Oreille on Monday, August 30.

"What a great achievement for families in the region," said MNA d'Argenteuil David Whissell. "I am pleased to be involved in the culmination of this long-term project that has led to the creation of 11 new jobs in Saint-André-d'Argenteuil."

Russell County OPP is asking for public assistance in a case of a 48-year-old missing woman from the Embrun area.

Parise Ouellette was reported missing by family members on July 30 from Embrun. She was seen by neighbors on that same day leaving for a walk with her small beige female poodle by the name of Mitsou.

She was seen again in the Long Sault area on July 31, but has not been seen since.

The Corporation de la bordure riveraine de Hawkesbury (CBRH) is defending itself against claims that it expects taxpayers to pay for $32,000 in engineering fees it claims to have incurred while investigating the possibility of a full decontamination of the CIP lagoon site.

President Pierre-Yves Séguin sent out a press release defending the CBRH's request and stating it is "completely false" to let the citizens of Hawkesbury believe that the CBRH is expecting taxpayers to foot the bill for those costs, which he says amount to only $10,440.

An Ottawa-based solar energy developer held a press conference alongside the municipalities of Casselman and The Nation last Thursday, August 26, to announce a series of solar energy projects in the region.

A total of seven rooftop-based projects, deployed and managed by SolPowered Energy Corporation, were recently approved in both municipalities by the Ontario Power Authority (OPA) for its feed-in tariff program.

The Golden Tap Awards represent the best in beer and brewing across the province, and winners are selected by the general beer-drinking public, through online voting.

Regional mayors feel the Ontario Good Roads Association (OGRA) is "double dipping" in its attempt to secure financial contributions from municipalities for its MMS Litigation Fund.

At the counties council meeting held on Tuesday, August 24, the UCPR decided not to contribute money to the fund since most municipalities already made financial contributions.

It appears the town won't be selling the aging Christ-Roi building anytime soon.

The one and only offer the town had on the aging building has fallen through, said CAO Normand Beaulieu.

At a meeting in December, council passed a resolution to put the Christ-Roi building for sale by public call for tenders at the minimum price of $350,000, respecting the July 2009 request for proposal document. The deadline for proposals was 3 p.m. on March 3.

The roar of engines and the dust of the demolition derby will fade out for a few weeks, following the postponement of the two-day Lachute Motor Mania event that was scheduled to take place at the Lachute fairgrounds this coming weekend.

The annual derby and motorized events have been postponed until Saturday, September 18, when the fairgrounds will explode with the roar and crash of the four-cylinder, six-cylinder and eight-cylinder demolition derby.

Council members of the Township of North Glengarry approved the awarding of a tender for the replacement of concrete sidewalks, to the tune of $107,600 including taxes, at the regular meeting held Monday, August 9.

The tender was awarded to Canada Concrete and Construction Inc., which was the only concrete company to reply with a bid, out of the four requested.

The sidewalk replacement will take place in Glen Robertson, Dalkeith, Maxville and Alexandria.

Despite the fact that her family hasn't heard from her in nearly two years, sightings of Marilyn Bergeron are on the rise in Hawkesbury.

The Missing Children and Adults Association, based in Cornwall, recently announced that it will be renewing search efforts for the 26-year-old woman, who disappeared from her home in Québec on February 17, 2008.

In a precedent-setting ruling for municipalities across the country, an Ontario Superior Court judge ruled last month that Russell Township has the right to enforce bilingual signs for its businesses.

Superior Court Justice Monique Métivier issued a 32-page ruling on Friday, August 20, saying a 2008 township bylaw requiring commercial signs to be in both French and English does not violate residents' rights to freedom of expression under the Charter of Rights and Freedoms.

A high-speed pursuit in a stolen truck ended quickly and violently on Wednesday, August 25, when a 41-year-old woman attempted to avoid a police pursuit - only to swerve around a spike belt and crash into a Sûreté du Québec (SQ) patrol car.

Police were first notified of the vehicle when a citizen phoned to report that a woman was seen driving in Lachute while holding a bottle of beer in her hand.

A debated motion to pay $64,000 to the North Glengarry Prescott-Russell Transit Board, to cover the regional transportation authority's budget overruns, was passed by a 4-2 vote at the regular council meeting of Monday, August 9.

In debating the motion, council members expressed reservations about the unforeseen payment and Mayor Grant Crack said he would ask the transit board - operating as Transit Eastern Ontario (TEO) - to implement changes in its decision-making process.

Until I came to an intersection south of Dalkeith, I never believed in them myself.
