Mathis Myre wants an even bigger wrestling event to come to Hawkesbury this year.
The local wrestling promoter appeared with his colleague Eric Dobson before Hawkesbury council on Monday, February 9 seeking support for a wrestling gala event he would like to host in town during the early part of summer, 2026.
Myre has already organized a local wrestling gala event for more than six years in the community. He told council he had noticed Hawkesbury lacks entertainment events. He explained how wrestling events are popular with families, youth, and a wide variety of people. Myre said these events not only bring visitors to Hawkesbury, but they also are good for the economy because spectators will eat in local restaurants.
Myre addressed concerns that some people may have about violence in entertainment wrestling.
“It is for the whole family,” he emphasized.
“Children love wrestling and the big personalities,” he added.
For the gala event he is planning, Myre would like to bring two former World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE) performers who are internationally known to Hawkesbury. Myre said the event requires a lot of money. He said the budget for last year’s event was $8,000, but with an even bigger gala planned for this year, it will require a budget of $15,000 to $20,000. Myre said $10,000 of that is for the talent alone.
“It’s not free,” he remarked.
Mayor Robert Lefebvre thanked Myre and recalled past wrestling events in Hawkesbury.
Recreation Coordinator Ken St-Denis said discussions about the wrestling gala started with Myre in October 2025. No decision about a date has been made but he said it is likely to be before, during, or after the Multicultural Festival at the end of June or in early July. Further consideration about the date will be given during the weeks ahead.
The Club Optimiste de Hawkesbury is also involved with the wrestling gala effort.
Councillors Julie Séguin and Tony Tsourounakis each described the planned wrestling gala as a positive event.
Discussions to establish the date of the wrestling gala and any form of support it may receive from the Town of Hawkesbury will continue between the promoters and the Recreation Department.
