On Monday, January 12, East Hawkesbury Council approved a temporary property tax levy outlining what residents are expected to pay by March 31, 2026. The levy comes as the municipality’s 2026 budget remains under discussion. A date for the adoption of the finalized 2026 budget has not been disclosed.

Under Ontario law, municipalities are permitted to collect an interim tax levy to ensure revenue continues coming in early in the year. For every property, East Hawkesbury will collect 50 per cent of what property owners paid in 2024.

The payment must be made in a lump sum by March 31 and applies to all property classes, including residential and commercial properties, based on total municipal and school taxes paid in 2024. Penalties will apply to late or missed payments, including an immediate 1.25 per cent penalty, followed by an additional 1.25 per cent added monthly until the balance is paid in full.

Once the council adopts the final 2026 tax levy, the amount paid through the interim levy will be deducted from the final tax bill.

Notices have been mailed to residents outlining the amount owed for their properties.
