The most prominent building on Hawkesbury’s waterfront skyline is a step closer to becoming an official heritage building.
On September 14, Hawkesbury town council adopted a resolution to give notice of the intention to designate Église Saint-Alphonse-de-Ligouri church at 470 Main Street East as a heritage property under the Ontario Heritage Act. The building is currently home to Paroisse Saint-Pierre-Apôtre parish. The notice of intent will be sent to the parish and to the Ontario Heritage Trust.
In 2026, the parish has celebrated the centennial of the reconstruction of the building following a fire. On June 22, a delegation from the parish requested Council designate Saint-Alphonse-de-Liguori Church as a heritage site. A comprehensive report identifying the elements that constitute its heritage attributes was presented to Council members, demonstrating that this building possesses heritage value due to its historical and architectural characteristic. The proposed designation aims to recognize and protect the elements of the property that have heritage value or significance. All Council members expressed strong interest in authorizing the necessary steps to designate the church as a heritage site in the Town of Hawkesbury.
A 30-day period following the publication of the notice is set aside for the submission of objections. If no objections are received, the Council may proceed to adopt the designation by-law.
