Alto, overseen by a federal crown corporation, has been running full page, colour advertisements in newspapers, including in The Review, to try to influence readers to support a high speed rail project.
The header on a current advert reads ; “The Train That Will Offer Fair Compensation”, and in the body of the text ; “the fair market value of the property”.
Too many in the business and government worlds selfishly believe that virtually everything can be reduced to a monetary value.
It can’t !
Our homes, our land, our fields, farms and livelihoods, our country roads, trails and our rural way of life are a large part of who we are, as individuals, as families, often multi-generational, and as communities.
That completeness cannot be reduced to dollars and cents.
It does not have a ‘market value’. It is Not for Sale !
Suppose an authority mandated that, without your permission, they could take one of your legs, pay you for it, and tell you that you can use the money to purchase an artificial limb, then get on with your life ….
Perhaps the analogy is far fetched, but the principle is not, it is very valid !
Our homes, our land, our country roads, our community and our rural way of life are NOT FOR SALE !
Back off government and cancel this foolish project !
