The Clan MacLeod Society of Glengarry celebrated its 90th anniversary on Sunday, June 14 at the Glengarry Pioneer Museum in Dunvegan.
The clan picnic is held annually and brings together those who are part of Clan MacLeod from across the region. Hold Fast is the clan motto, and MacLeods did Hold Fast against the rain on Sunday. The picnic went ahead under the Pioneer Museum’s large shelter, so everyone was dry while enjoying food and live entertainment.
The Glengarry Clan MacLeod Society is the oldest in Canada, founded in 1936. It is the oldest continuous MacLeod Society outside Britain. The first Glengarry Clan Gathering was held at Dunvegan on July 4, 1936, with 1,000 people in attendance.
The early MacLeods, MacCuaigs, and MacGillivrays arrived in Glengarry in 1793 from Scotland under the leadership of Kenneth MacLeod and his son Captain Alexander MacLeod. They settled around Kirk Hill (Glenelg).
Since the formation of the Clan MacLeod Society of Glengarry 90 years ago, 11 other MacLeod societies have been established across the country. Each of those belong to the Clan MacLeod Societies of Canada.
