Dear Editor,

A drive around Prescott-Russell leaves one in doubt that 23 per cent of our natural forest cover remains (statistics 2024).

The Government of Ontario recommends a MINIMUM 30 to 40 per cent tree coverage to maintain a healthy ecosystem. For decades, much lip service has been paid to following the guidelines but anyone with eyes in their head knows this is but a cynical fantasy.  It is shameful we allow this deforestation to take place.

On the bright side, perhaps it offers an opportunity to adjust our tourism ‘pitch’ to something along the lines of “Make Prescott-Russell your ‘Manitoba-experience’ where you can see for miles and miles without a tree to disturb your view”.

We’re well on the way – without a cent being spent.

Sincerely,

ian hepburn
