Hawkesbury town council has adopted a three-year temporary zoning amendment which allows a chip stand to locate at the former École Marguerite-Bourgeoys school site on Bon Pasteur Street.

A public meeting on the temporary zoning by-law amendment was held on Monday, March 9. The amendment by law was subsequently adopted at the Regular Council Meeting that same evening.

The property at 82 Bon Pasteur Street was zoned Institutional, which does not permit a restaurant establishment. The temporary use amendment allows the business to operate on the site for up to three years. Currently, the chip stand is located adjacent to the gas station at the corner of McGill and Bon Pasteur streets.

The chip stand will be located further back from the street to allow parking at the front. On-street parking is not permitted in the area.

A resident of Mill Entrance, a short dead-end residential street at the rear of the former school property, addressed the public meeting and said she has no objection to the chip stand locating on the vacant land, but she has also noticed a lot of garbage on the ground around the current site. She has asked the owner of the chip stand if he planned to add garbage bins.

“It’s only a little thing. It’s really important because the street gets littered with garbage and there’s no garbage bin there now and that’s my only concern,” said the resident.

“I asked the owner and he hasn’t done it yet,” she added.

A land use planning consultant working for the Town of Hawkesbury said having garbage bins would be good, but it is not something that may be addressed through zoning. However, he said the request for garbage bins will be shared with the business owner.
