Alt-No wants area residents opposed to the proposed high-speed rail project to urge Senators in Parliament to vote against Bill C-15.

A section of that bill, if it becomes law, would make it easier for the federal government to expropriate private property for major projects, including the Alto line between Ottawa and Montréal that will cross Prescott-Russell, Argenteuil, and Mirabel. Members of Parliament (MP) in the House of Commons adopted the bill on February 26. A majority of Senators in the 105-seat Senate must adopt the bill before it may be signed into law by the Governor-General, who acts as the representative of the King.

St-Eugène resident Kathleen O’Connell Renaud of Alt-No said the group has issued a Call to Action campaign and have asked their supporters within the possible high-speed corridors to participate each week. The corridors include the area under consideration across Prescott-Russell, Argenteuil, and Mirabel for the initial line connecting Ottawa and Montréal. Other corridors involve the proposed lines between Ottawa and Toronto and Montréal and Québec City. The current call to action asks citizens to write to Senators and ask them to vote against Bill C-15.

O’Connell Renaud said Alt-No is also working to expand its committee to include all the towns in Prescott-Russell and Argenteuil.
