The South Nation River and its tributaries rose dramatically on Wednesday, March 11 following days of warmer temperatures which caused ice and snow to melt. Fields in low-laying areas flooded and a wide expanse of acres submerged by water appeared in parts of The Nation and Alfred and Plantagenet. The United Counties of Prescott and Russell closed County Road 9 between County Road 16 and County Road 2 for a few hours on Thursday, March 12 due to water on the road. However, the road was reopened later in the day. Fields on each side of County Road 15 between Fournier and Alfred were also flooded and that road became a causeway of sorts. The arrival of colder temperatures on Thursday meant that the large amount of water in the area began to freeze, temporarily reducing the flow of water and risk to area roads.
