Alt-no, the main group opposed to the proposed Alto high-speed rail line, is focusing its efforts on community meetings and advocacy, according to Kathleen O’Connell-Renaud of St-Eugène who is part of Alt-no.

O’Connell-Renaud said they will soon issue two calls to action. One will be to run local town hall-style meetings and the other will be for a rally.

The town hall-style event will be held in Vankleek Hill to include both Champlain and East Hawkesbury residents.

“We are locating speakers and invited participants now,” said O’Connell-Renaud.

The rally will be held at a location near Vankleek Hill.

A change.org petition to get the federal government to suspend the Alto high-speed rail project has been closed because an official petition with the same goal will be tabled in the House of Commons by Conservative Member of Parliament Scott Reid of Lanark-Frontenac.

The previous petition was an initiative of Vankleek Hill Alt-no participants Andrea Glenn and Russell Gibbs. On Saturday, March 7, they announced on social media that because the original petition had served its purpose, it was closed. They are instead urging individuals to add their names to the official petition, which may be accessed through the House of Commons website.

As of Saturday evening, about 7,600 signatures had been added to the petition.
