North Glengarry Mayor Jamie MacDonald confirmed to The Review that he will run for another term in the 2026 municipal election. MacDonald said he initially thought his current term might be his last, but decided to run again because several major municipal projects are still underway.

“We’ve received the money for the Alexandria Lagoon, a project that has been a long time coming, and I want to be here to make sure and see that through,” MacDonald said.

“There’s also the lagoon in Maxville, which is in the process of an environmental assessment, and the Alexandria Main Street redevelopment. I’ve lived in Alexandria my whole life, and that street has never been fully done, and we have one chance to do that. It needs to be done. It’s in terrible shape.”

MacDonald’s key priorities for the next term, should he be re-elected, include the Alexandria Lagoon project, the Maxville Lagoon expansion, and the Alexandria Main Street redevelopment project being undertaken with Stormont, Dundas, and Glengarry (SDG) Counties.

“These projects can change the future of our township,” MacDonald said.

While reflecting on his current term, MacDonald said council could have done a better job with community engagement on the Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) in Dunvegan, saying, “Just letting the people that are within the 300-metre radius know is not good enough when it’s something that affects the whole community. We need to do a better job of that.”

MacDonald says he has committed to improving community communication, including through appearances and updates on Glengarry TV.

His message before the election is that: “We basically have until August 15 to get stuff done, and we intend to. We will continue to work together to try and get as many things as we can done. Whether somebody’s running against somebody else, there’s a job to do, and we need to stick together and do it.”
