The Eastern Ontario Secondary School Athletic Association (EOSSAA) Curling Championships in Brockville on Tuesday, February 24, and February 26, there were strong performances from Vankleek Hill Collegiate Institute (VCI) taking home gold, École secondaire publique Le Sommet earning silver, and Glengarry District High School (GDHS) proudly representing the region despite not advancing to the finals.
Both VCI and Le Sommet delivered dominant performances, VCI won all three of their games and Le Sommet won two out of three games to secure spots in the finals. GDHS also showed determination, finishing the day with one win and gaining valuable experience at the championship level.
Heading into the finals, VCI first faced Holy Cross Catholic Secondary School from Kingston in a qualifying matchup for the gold medal game. VCI came out on top, advancing to the championship final. Le Sommet also competed in a qualifying game against Madawaska Valley District High School from Barry’s Bay, earning a victory that sent them to the gold medal game as well.
In the gold medal final, VCI faced École secondaire publique L’Héritage from Cornwall in a thrilling and tightly contested match. The game proved to be a nail-biter, requiring an extra ninth end after tying 6-6 on the eighth end, before VCI secured the win. The final score being 8-6 claiming the gold medal.
Le Sommet also battled hard in their gold medal game against Kingston Secondary School. Their match was equally intense, tying on the seventh end, having to fight for the button on the eighth end. The final score being 7-8, despite a strong effort, Le Sommet fell just short, earning a well-deserved silver medal.
The championship showcased the skill, resilience, and sportsmanship of all three teams, highlighting a successful showing for local schools at the EOSSAA level.
