A shortage of road salt across Ontario this winter has The Town of Hawkesbury and The Nation Municipality taking measures to conserve their supply.

Road salt is widely used each winter to melt ice on roads to make the surface safer for drivers, but the shortage has led the Town of Hawkesbury Department of Public Works to use more of a salt and sand mixture on streets than just salt. Sand on ice and snow improves traction for vehicle tires. Salt continues to be applied to primary streets in Hawkesbury with higher volumes of traffic.

In The Nation Municipality, the Department of Public Works has also reduced salt use on less traveled roads. The Department is confident that it has enough of a mix of sand and salt for the duration of winter weather.
