A house was destroyed and some pets were lost in a fire west of Vankleek Hill on Tuesday, January 27.

At approximately 10:30 pm, The Nation Fire Department was called to the house fire on Concession 2 Caledonia between Claude Duval Sideroad and Lalonde Sideroad. Crews from the St-Bernardin and St-Isidore fire stations arrived on scene and initially launched an offensive interior attack; however, conditions quickly necessitated a shift to a defensive approach. Firefighters from Vankleek Hill assisted the crews from The Nation.

Firefighters worked throughout the night, and an excavator was used at around 5 a.m. to completely extinguish the fire on all three levels of the structure: the basement, the main floor, and the attic.

No firefighters or residents were injured.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation and is not considered suspicious at this time.

The Nation Fire Department reminds residents of the importance of regularly checking their smoke detectors, which can save lives.
