Firefighters from Champlain and Hawkesbury responded to a fire at a former wood drying warehouse during the evening on Thursday, January 22.

According to Champlain Director of Fire Services Ghislain Pigeon, the fire department was called to the site on Highway 34 near Greenlane at 8:28 pm. The Vankleek Hill Station responded first with a pumper, tanker and rescue units, and the L’Orignal Station also responded with a tanker. Two additional tankers were also requested, along with the ladder truck from Hawkesbury.

Pigeon said sparks could be seen on the southwest corner of the former wood drying building. Hydro One personnel also arrived to ensure high-voltage electricity was disconnected for the safety of the firefighters. roof’s southwest corner of a former wood dryer building on the South-East side of the property.

“Once hydro was isolated, teams removed portions of the roof and the fascia to reach the seat of the fire, water and foam was then applied to complete extinguishment,” Pigeon said.

Damage to the building is limited to the roof section and fascia. Pigeon said the fire may have been caused due to exposure to a brush fire on the neighbouring property, either by direct exposure or embers reaching to the roof area.

There were no injuries resulting from the fire.
