A court-appointed receiver will sell the luxury Château Montebello resort hotel.

On November 3, 2025, the Superior Court of Québec issued an Order appointing global accounting firm PricewaterhouseCoopers Inc., LIT, as receiver in respect of the property of Millennium Golden Jiachen Hotel Holdings Ltd. and 4345118 Canada Inc. Those companies are subsidiaries of the insolvent China Evergrande Group which had purchased the resort in 2014. In February 2024, courts in the United States and Hong Kong ordered the liquidation of the company’s assets, Evergrande and its subsidiaries do not manage the Château Montebello. It is operated by Fairmont Hotels and Resorts, a division of ACCOR, which also operates the Château Laurier in Ottawa and Château Frontenac in Québec City.

PricewaterhouseCoopers (PWC), will be responsible for selling the Château Montebello property to a new owner. In the meantime, the resort continues to operate normally.

A Notice to Creditors identifies $47,597,891 worth of assets associated with the resort hotel, including $34,117,242 in immovable property for the hotel buildings. The largest secured creditor is the Caisse Desjardins de Brossard, which is owed $10,796,169. Unsecured creditors are owed a total of $53,144,440. The largest unsecured creditor is the parent company Evergrande for $47,999,900 in loans. The second largest unsecured creditor is $2,280,380 in salaries and wages payable.

The Château Montebello was built by the Canadian Pacific (CP) Railway in 1930 and operated as the private Seignory Club resort until 1970 when CP turned it back into a public facility. The resort is known for its impressive log architecture, and year-round sports and recreation opportunities. It is located on the historic lands of Louis-Joseph Papineau whose manor house is adjacent to the resort. Hollywood celebrities, royalty, and world leaders have all visited the Château Montebello during the past 96 years.
