The night sky was ablaze with colour on Tuesday, November 11. A significant solar storm in outer space created a grand display or aurora borealis, also known as the northern lights.

Astronomer Richard Alexandrowich, who lives in Alexandria said the phenomenon was easily visible with the naked eye between 11 pm and 11:45 pm Tuesday.

“The entire celestial sphere was saturated with the display,” he said.

Alexandrowich explained the science behind the brilliant colour.

“The sun hurled a massive dose of plasma and electromagnetic radiation towards us known as a ‘coronal mass ejection’ or CME.  Reports came in from across North America. The event was an X-5 category which is extremely high,” he said.
