Most 16-year-olds have part-time jobs. Tyler Kirby of Chute-à-Blondeau’s motocross racing hobby is also his part-time job.
Kirby is among the best in North America. In August 2025, he won the Schoolboy category Championship at the Walton Transcan event held in Walton, near London, Ontario.
“Super awesome,” is how Kirby describes his achievement.
“I’ve been working for a championship for my whole career,” he said.
Kirby was among 42 competitors from all over Canada and the United States at Walton. Kirby’s next challenge is training for the 2026 Amateur National Motocross Championship to be held at Loretta Lynn Ranch in Hurricane Mills, Tennessee. Kirby first competed there in 2023. Beginning in February 2026, he will spend two months training near Orlando, Florida while continuing his high school studies online.
Kirby has been riding a dirt bike since he was three years old on his family’s farm.
“Just around the yard and the fields,” he said.
Kirby is still competing as an amateur but plans to go professional in 2027. That means motocross will be his full-time job for as long as he wants.
Five dirt bikes make up Kirby’s riding fleet. He won the Transcan Championship at Walton with one of his two KTM 125’s and also owns three KTM 250’s. Recently, he began to only use the 250’s for competition.
During good weather, Kirby still trains at home on his family’s farm. He said maintaining good personal fitness is also important for training, so he works out regularly.
Kirby said that as his motocross career has evolved, he realized he has a hobby that seems like an enjoyable part-time job.
“I realized that I’m pretty good and I’m doing it right now as a hobby.”
